TILT TOP RACKET (Lawn Tennis) |
Tilt Top |
Tilt Top |
Convex |
Smooth with butt cap and neck collar |
100% |
| Description |
||||||
| This tilt top racket is from the late 1870's or early 1880's. It was made by the Jefferies Company aka Jefferies and Mallings of Woolwich, Kent, England. The name Jefferies is stamped on one side of the convex wedge. Over the Jefferies name three initials are engraved which appear to be JRM.They could stand for _._.Munroe who was owner of the racket at some point due to his name carved on the other side of the wedge. Or, Mr. Munroe could have been the second owner and the initials could stand for James Mallings (middle initial unknown) who was associated with the Jefferies Co. More importantly the Jefferies Co. was the maker of Major Wingfield's original Sphairistike lawn tennis sets. Thus the racket is very old and made by a famous maker. Strings are probably replacements, but are in good shape. This price is low for such an old racket made by a famous maker and in nice condition. See TR003,4, and 5 for rackets which followed this tilt top making the perfect display of the earliest lawn tennis rackets. |

Very Early Lawn Tennis Racket -- Designated A. |
Slight Tilt |
Convex |
Plain Wood |
Original, 90% good |
| Description |
||||||
| Only 2 photos; one from each side. This racket dates from the late 1870's to the early 1880's. Being one of the earliest lawn tennis rackets the head shape has a slight tilt like the court tennis rackets that preceded it. The heavy strings appear to be original. The all wood handle is thin and smooth with no butt cap. The convex wedge with a point is rarer than the traditional rounded wedge. It is a fine specimen of a very early racket, probably made in the UK by a bench craftsman before many racket making firms emerged. See TR002, 4, and 5 for the perfect display of the earliest lawn tennis rackets. |

Very Early Lawn Tennis Racket -- Designated B. |

Convex |
Thin and smooth. |
Orignal, 99%good. |
| Description |
||||||
| Only 2 photos; one of each side. This racket appears to be made in the late 1880's. It strays a little further from the court tennis style than TR003 (above) and more toward the symmetrical design which lawn tennis ultimately used. It has a more traditional rounded convex wedge. Strings look original. The handle is thin and smooth with a thin leather strip around the butt. A great example of a very early racket probably made in the UK by a bench craftsman before many racket making firms emerged. See TR002, 3, and 5 for the perfect display of the earliest lawn tennis rackets. |

| Description |
||||||
| This racket is from the 1890's. By this time the design was clear of the court tennis shape and quite symmetrical like lawn tennis. Strings look original. The handle has the grooves which began in the 1890's. It also has a butt cap but no ID. Its another great example of a pre-1900 racket. See rackets TR002, 3, and 4 for the perfect display of the earliest lawn tennis rackets. |

| Description |
||||||
| This famous gun tool company started making tennis rackets and golf clubs in the very early 1900's. From my golf club research I know BGI and Spalding were fierce competitors. Spalding had picked the name Morristown (as in then wealthy Morristown, NJ) for a model name for golf clubs. BGI countered with Fairfield (as in the equally prestigious Fairfield, CT). BGI carried Fairfield through to tennis rackets (oddly Spalding didn't). This racket dates to about 1903 and is in very good condition for that age. Strings are 100% and look original. Not only is it an historically significant piece but it really is mellow looking and will display beautifully. |

| Here is an unusual racket. I cannot find a maker's name. Only a picture of a dog, probably a German Sheperd, and the remaining letters ___TERN UN___ which probably said WESTERN UNION. The undamaged strings look original, the wrappings are good, the handle is thick and sturdy and the head is flat. A nice and possibly rare open throat racket. |

Prize Cup with CANE reinforced handle |

Cane Reinforced |

| Description |
||||||
| Here is a rare old wood tennis racket. Made by Wright & Ditson, this Prize Cup model has a 'GENUINE CANE' reinforcement running up and down the handle on both sides. W&D made the Prize Cup model as early as 1939, but I found no mention of the Cane reinforcement in my many reference books. I suppose this means few were made and that it is now rare. Strings are distressed but frame is flat, leather grip is good, and WD butt cap is good. All decals are good and readable. Photos and Price are coming. |

| Named for champion Richard Sears, this W&D racket was probably made between 1901 and 1905. Bears a patent date of Jan.3rd 1905. See Ref.8 TA&C pages 80 and 179. This racket is in very good to excellent condition. It has reinforced shoulders, perfect strings which appear original, good butt cap and the great transitional flat top head. An early beauty. |

| Description |

| Except for distressed strings this early racket with convex wedge is in very good condition. It was made in the early 1900's. See nice write up in Ref.8 TA&C. The model name LONGWOOD is after the famous Longwood Cricket (and Tennis) Club of Boston. The butt cap is good with the W&D logo. The handle is marked Patented. It's a very pretty early American racket which displays nicely. |
